What We Do
Lumia Development delivers highly practical SQL training for SQL database users, developers and programmers. Most of our customers are involved in some way with the following database servers:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Oracle
- MySQL
- PostgreSQL
- IBM DB2
Most of our attendees have a need to extract information from existing corporate or public sector databases.
We deliver both introductory and advanced level SQL training. We do this either by delivering one of our standard training courses or by creating a custom course specifically to fit. In reality, none of our training is standard because 'doing a good job' usually involves some 'tailoring to suit' for every assignment.
For more information about our standard SQL training courses, visit our SQL Training Courses page. For more information about our custom SQL training courses, you can either telephone us or email us.
How We Do It
We come to you.
After agreeing suitable dates, a highly experienced trainer arrives at your premises with everything required to deliver the training. This includes pre-configured laptops for use during the training, a projector, and relevant course materials. It even includes extension leads and 'Duck' tape to ensure that cables are not left trailing dangerously across the floor.
All you need to provide is a suitable room with: enough work space for each attendee, a clear wall upon which to project - and of course the attendees!
The trainer arrives around 30 minutes before the start of the course on the first day so that the equipment can be unpacked and prepared. When the training is complete, the trainer's final task is to ensure that the room is left exactly as it was found.
Each attendee receives:
- SQL training notes (in digital form).
- A copy of their own work (in digital form).
- A printed certificate of attendance (posted afterwards).
Why We're Special
Our training approach is unique.
For over twenty years, we have known that people learn best in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere and that they learn by doing. On a Lumia Development practical course, the trainer is there to assist each attendee as they become engrossed in a set of finely-tuned, interesting, enjoyable, real-world exercises and projects which cement their new learning.
There is plenty of time for one-to-one help.
Focused presentations are given as and when appropriate. And while no-one has to 'wait for others to finish', equally no-one has to 'rush to keep up'. There is much stimulating interaction and opportunity to go 'off-piste' where necessary. We are most commonly praised for expertly tuning the pace for each and every individual in the room - whatever their prior experience.
All our courses are more like tailored practical workshops or one-to-one tutorial sessions. They are less like other standard training courses or 'Death by PowerPoint' presentations. It is common for attendees to write in their post course evaluation: 'This was the best course I have ever attended!'.
We are SQL specialists.
Each Lumia Development trainer has at least 20 years of mixed development and training experience. We don't employ freelancers or subcontract any of our work. We don't try to be 'all things to all people'. We focus on our speciality (SQL) - and do it well.
Our long list of customers comes mostly from the corporate and public sectors. There is a list of recent customers on the left of every page of this site. You can read some of what they say here: View comments from recent attendees. Two words crop up over and over in the completed evaluation forms. These are: flexible and enjoyable.
